Mobile-friendly website design is winning in Google search results

It’s been several months now since Google implemented their mobile-friendly algorithm update and many are wondering if it was the big deal that everyone anticipated.

Google introduced the algorithm update to provide better search results on mobile phones and to achieve this the update favours mobile-friendly websites over non-mobile-friendly sites in the search results.

The original announcement on Google’s Webmaster blog stated:

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.”

After the first month of the update being introduced, Marketing Land reported that while some sites saw no change at all, others were losing up to 35% of their mobile search rankings in the top three positions.

A few months on, new studies have reported that non-mobile sites were disappearing from the top positions on Google and that 77 percent of sites on Page 1 results were now mobile-friendly. Also that mobile-friendly websites had seen an 11 percent increase in page views since the algorithm update.

Generally it seems that companies that have made sure their websites are mobile-friendly have maintained a strong position on the search engines.

It is likely that Google will continue to fine-tune this algorithm to improve the mobile user’s search experience, so there may be more developments yet to come which could see further impact on search positions for sites that are still not mobile-friendly.

With more than half of Internet searches now being carried out on mobile devices a mobile-friendly responsive website design is an essential investment for your business.

The Google Mobile Friendly Update

Google has announced a new mobile-friendly algorithm that will come into effect this April. In simple terms, this means that Google will favour mobile-friendly websites over non-mobile friendly sites in the search results.

The new rules will affect mobile searches and is said to have a big impact on search results. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly you may see a drop in your websites’s rankings, which could result in less traffic to your website.
